The awards also gave the foundation the opportunity to spotlight the
pleasures of the fragrance experience to those who might not have found
it relevant to their particular field. This was especially true of the fashion
magazine editors. As I’ve said, they gave very little editorial credit to
fragrances in the first half of the twentieth century. It inspired the board
to add an award to honor the best fragrance coverage by a magazine. The
payoff was big. Beauty editors began to devote major space to full-length
articles on fragrances and the sense of smell (and still do.) Fragrances
became an editorial “must” at holiday times and throughout the year. New
fragrance introductions made news in every issue. Techniques of buying,
wearing, and caring for fragrance became essential editorials.
